The Hyundai Excel was the first Hyundai sold in the states, so in the spirit of nostalgia, let’s take a look back.The Hyundai Excel came in 3 and 5-door variants. In Europe it came under the moniker Pony, and Presto in South Korea. The Excel was an immediate hit, helped by its low $4,995 base price tag. The buzz the low price generated help it achieve a “Best Product” award from Fortune Magazine, as well as setting a sales record for an imports first year.

The television ads stressed price comparisons between the Excel and other models:

But less face it, the foreign commercials were much more exciting!

Hyundai ceased building the Excel in 1994, when it was replaced by the Accent.

Since the Excel Hyundai has remained a price leader in many classes of vehicles, including the forthcoming Genesis luxury model.
